My name is Ben Asamoah, a Belgian director with roots from Ghana. I was born in 1985 in Agona Swedru, Ghana and lived during my childhood in both Belgium and Ghana. I studied Audiovisual Arts and graduated as a Documentary film director at RITS in Brussels.
In 2013, I returned to my native country, Ghana, after discovering that a lot of my childhood friends had become Sakawa-boys. If I wouldn’t have studied at the film school RITSC in Belgium, I certainly would have become a Sakawa-boy. I felt it was time to tell a story about the life I probably would have lived, if I had not migrated to Belgium. Since I understand their motives and can relate to the culture, I decided to tell the story of Sakawa from my own African perspective.
